Musandam is famously romanticized as a rugged couple's retreat or a large family getaway from Dubai, but it is an exceptionally welcoming and completely safe destination for solo backpackers and independent travelers.

Is Musandam Safe for Solo Travelers?

Yes, incredibly safe. Oman consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world. Crime rates are exceptionally low. The local Omani and expat populations in Khasab are warm, respectful, and very hospitable. Solo female travelers will find that dressing modestly (covering shoulders and knees) out of respect for the local Islamic culture guarantees a hassle-free experience.

Joining Group Activities

The biggest hurdle for solo travelers in remote areas is cost, as chartering private boats or 4x4s is expensive.

The "Sharing" Solution:

In Khasab, almost all tour operators run "Sharing" Dhow Cruises and "Sharing" Mountain Safaris. This means you buy a single ticket and join a group of other tourists on the boat or in the Jeep. This is by far the most economical way to see Khor Sham and a fantastic way to meet other travelers from all over the world.

Getting Around

If you fly into Khasab via Oman Air or take the NFC Ferry, you won't have a car. While Khasab has no public buses, you can catch taxis outside the airport or LuLu Hypermarket. If you book a sharing dhow cruise, tour operators will almost always pick you up from your hotel or the airport for free, which solves the main logistical challenge of a day trip.

Accommodation for Solo Travelers

Khasab does not have a traditional backpacker hostel scene with bunk beds. However, there are budget-friendly hotel apartments and guesthouses in the town center that are very affordable for single occupancy. Alternatively, you can camp for free on Bassa Beach if you have a tent!
