Musandam with Kids

A practical guide for families visiting Khasab.

Musandam is an incredible destination for adventurous families. Between watching wild dolphins, swimming in calm waters, and exploring ancient coastal forts, it is a brilliant alternative to the theme parks of nearby Dubai.

However, because it is a rugged, nature-first destination, traveling here with young children requires a bit of specific planning.

Top Activities for Families

1. Dolphin Watching on a Dhow

This is the absolute highlight for kids. The humpback dolphins in the Musandam fjords love to race alongside the traditional wooden dhow boats. Unlike speedboats, dhows are wide, incredibly stable, fully shaded, and padded with Arabian carpets and cushions—making them extremely safe and comfortable for toddlers to crawl and walk around on.

2. Swimming at Bassa Beach

Bassa Beach is a sandy, public beach near Khasab port with very gentle waves, making it perfect for toddlers to paddle in.

3. Exploring Khasab Fort

The 17th-century Khasab Fort is excellent for older kids. They can climb the central tower, explore the traditional wooden boats mounted in the courtyard, and see authentic Omani swords and artifacts in the tiny museum rooms.

Safety & Practical Tips

  • Sun Protection: The sun in Musandam is severe. Always pack rash guards (UV shirts) for swimming. The saltwater here is highly buoyant and clear, but there is zero natural shade on the islands like Telegraph Island.
  • Snorkeling Gear: While tour operators provide masks and snorkels, they are generally adult-sized. If your kids want to snorkel, it is highly recommended you bring their own properly fitting kid-sized masks from home.
  • Life Jackets: Dhow cruises are required by law to carry life jackets, including child sizes. However, for infants or toddlers under 3, bringing a familiar, properly fitted Coast Guard-approved puddle-jumper or vest is a smart idea.
  • Food & Snacks: While full-day cruises include buffet lunches (usually rice, chicken, salads), picky eaters might struggle. Bring plenty of familiar snacks. LuLu Hypermarket in Khasab stocks all major international baby formula and snack brands.

Activities to reconsider for young children

Mountain safaris to Jebel Harim involve 3-4 hours driving on very steep, bumpy, unpaved terrain. This can cause severe motion sickness in young children and can be frightening. We generally recommend sticking to the water activities for kids under 7.
