Camping in Musandam
Where rugged mountains meet the sea under a blanket of stars.
Oman is world-renowned for its relaxed "wild camping" laws, and Musandam is no exception. With almost zero light pollution outside of Khasab town, it is a paradise for adventurers looking to pitch a tent.
Wild Camping Rules in Oman
Unlike many European or North American countries, you can generally pitch a tent anywhere in Oman as long as it is:
- Not on private property or fenced agricultural land.
- Not too close to military installations or government buildings.
- Not directly blocking a wadi (dry riverbed) during rain warnings due to flash floods.
Crucially, there are no camping fees for wild camping.
Top Camping Spots in Khasab
Bassa Beach (Public)
The most accessible spot, right in Khasab. Has public toilets, showers, and a calm bay. Gets very busy with locals on weekends (Thu-Fri).
Khor Najd Viewpoint
Spectacular camping overlooking the fjord. Accessible by 4x4 only. Very windy at night but the sunrise views are unparalleled.
Sayh Plateau (Jebel Harim)
High altitude mountain camping. Cold at night, even in summer. Incredible stargazing and total silence. Strict 4x4 access only.
What to Pack
You can purchase basic camping supplies (charcoal, firewood, basic tents, and food) at the LuLu Hypermarket in Khasab. However, for a comfortable stay, we recommend bringing:
- A thick sleeping mat (the ground in Musandam is notoriously rocky).
- Heavy-duty tent pegs (standard pegs will bend in the hard ground; use rocks if necessary).
- Warm layers (if camping in the mountains from November to March).
- All your drinking water.
