Khmazera Castle
A hidden historical gem nestled away from the bustling Khasab port.
While the grand Khasab Fort (built by the Portuguese) gets most of the attention, history buffs will find equal charm in the smaller, deeply authentic Khmazera Castle located further inland.
Unlike the large coastal forts designed to repel naval invasions, Khmazera Castle was constructed by local Omanis to protect the inland agricultural communities and the vital freshwater wells from tribal raids coming through the rugged mountain passes.
Architecture and Artifacts
The castle is built entirely of regional materials: mountain limestone bound with local mud and mortar, with ceilings crafted from palm fronds and wooden beams. This intelligent design kept the interior incredibly cool during the scorching summer months.
The entrance is flanked by two prominent antique iron cannons. Inside, you can view the fully restored ancient well—the very reason the castle was built in this specific location. Visitors can also find curious regional exhibits, including giant fossilized oyster shells found in the nearby mountains.
A Quiet Escape
Because Khmazera Castle is rarely included on the itineraries of large cruise ship tours, you will likely have the entire complex to yourself. It offers a much more peaceful, contemplative historical experience compared to the busy harbor area.

Photography Note
The rich brown tones of the castle stone look spectacular during the "golden hour" (briefly before sunset) when contrasted against the surrounding jagged mountains. Be sure to frame the antique cannons in your shots!
