Khasab Musandam

The Norway of Arabia — Fjords, Dolphins & Ancient Mountains

Just 2.5 hours from Dubai, Khasab is the gateway to one of the world's most dramatic yet accessible wilderness destinations.

What is Khasab Musandam?

Khasab Musandam is the capital and main city of the Musandam Governorate, a dramatic exclave of Oman separated from the rest of the Sultanate by the United Arab Emirates. Perched at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula overlooking the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Musandam is one of the most geographically remarkable places in the Middle East.

The region is nicknamed the "Norway of Arabia" for its deep, winding inlets — called khors — that slice between towering limestone cliffs rising 1,000–2,000 meters from the sea. The most iconic of these is Khor Sham, home to the legendary Telegraph Island and vast pods of wild dolphins.

Beyond the fjords, Musandam is also home to the Shihuh tribe — one of Oman's most ancient communities — and the remote fishing village of Kumzar, accessible only by boat, whose people speak the unique Kumzari language (a blend of Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and Hindi). The peninsula's highest point, Jebel Harim (2,087m), is encrusted with 250-million-year-old marine fossils — proof that these mountains were once an ancient seabed.

Why visit? Because nowhere else in the world can you swim with wild dolphins in the morning, lunch on a traditional dhow beneath giant limestone walls, drive a 4x4 to a mountain summit with marine fossils, and camp under an uninterrupted Milky Way at night — all within a 2.5-hour drive from Dubai.
