Traditional Omani Dress

Discover the elegance and meaning behind traditional Omani clothing — a living expression of culture, identity, and regional pride.

Dishdasha

Men

The ankle-length white robe worn daily by Omani men. In Musandam, you'll notice the "tassel" (furakha) on the front neckline, perfumed and worn with pride.

Kumma

Men

The round, flat, embroidered cap worn by many Omani men. Each region has its own embroidery patterns — Musandam's designs are distinctive.

Mussar / Turban

Men

An ornately wrapped turban worn on formal occasions. Methods of wrapping vary by region and indicate the wearer's origins.

Khanjar

Men

The curved ceremonial dagger worn on a belt. A symbol of Omani identity featured on the national flag and currency.

Abaya

Women

The black outer garment worn by Omani women in public. Modern abayas feature embroidery, crystals, and designer elements.

Burqa (Batula)

Women

A gold-coloured face covering traditional to older Musandam women. This distinctive facial covering is unique to Gulf coastal communities.

Dress Etiquette for Visitors

Oman is a welcoming and relatively relaxed Gulf state, but modest dress is appreciated — especially outside resorts and beaches. Here are some guidelines:

  • Towns & villages: Cover shoulders and knees. Loose, lightweight clothing works best.
  • Beaches & boats: Swimwear is perfectly acceptable during water activities. Cover up when returning to town.
  • Religious sites: Conservative dress required. Women may need to cover their hair.

Omanis will never enforce a dress code on tourists, but dressing modestly shows respect and is always appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do Omani men wear?
The standard daily dress is the dishdasha (a white ankle-length robe, also called kandura in some Gulf countries), worn with a kumma (cap) or mussar (turban), and sometimes a khanjar (ceremonial dagger) on formal occasions.
What should tourists wear in Musandam?
Tourists should dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered when not at the beach. Swimwear is fine on boats and beaches. Women do not need to cover their hair. Light, breathable fabrics are recommended due to the heat.
Can tourists buy traditional Omani dress?
Yes! Dishdashas and kummas can be purchased in the Khasab souk. Custom-tailored dishdashas make excellent souvenirs. Prices start from 5-10 OMR for a basic dishdasha.
