Crossing from the UAE into the Musandam Peninsula of Oman is simpler than most visitors expect — but there are a few key things you need to know in advance to avoid being turned back at the border. This is the definitive, up-to-date guide.

The Border You'll Cross: Al Darah (UAE) / Tibat (Oman)

There is only one official land border crossing connecting mainland UAE to the Musandam Peninsula. On the UAE side (Ras Al Khaimah), it is known as the Al Darah border crossing, while on the Oman side, it is called the Tibat border crossing (also spelled Tibah).

Location: On the northern UAE coastal highway (E11), approximately 50 km north of Ras Al Khaimah city.

Opening Hours: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What it connects: UAE (Al Darah, Ras Al Khaimah) → Oman (Tibat, Musandam Governorate)

Step-by-Step: How to Cross the Tibat Border

1. UAE Exit Side

As you approach the border, follow signs to the UAE exit lane. You will:

  • Stop at a barrier and hand over all passports in the vehicle
  • Pay the UAE exit fee: 35 AED per person (cash only, AED or OMR accepted)
  • Receive exit stamps in all passports
  • Proceed to the barrier and cross into the Oman side

2. Oman Entry Side

Immediately after the UAE barrier, you reach the Omani customs:

  • Walk (or drive up) to the Oman immigration booth
  • Present your passport
  • Visa on Arrival: Most nationalities receive a free 14-day visit stamp here — no pre-arrangement needed
  • The officer will stamp your passport — this takes 2–5 minutes per person
  • A vehicle inspection may be requested by customs — it is brief and routine

3. Drive to Khasab

After clearing both sides, you are now in Oman! Follow the coastal mountain road approximately 60 km to Khasab. The drive takes 45–60 minutes and is spectacularly scenic.

Who Gets Free Visa on Arrival?

  • 🇬🇧 UK, 🇺🇸 USA, 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇦🇺 Australia, all EU countries
  • 🇮🇳 India (visit visa holders in UAE), 🇵🇰 Pakistan, 🇧🇩 Bangladesh (check latest rules)
  • Most Southeast Asian nationalities (Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia)
  • GCC nationals (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar) — No visa needed

Always double-check the latest Oman visa requirements on the Royal Oman Police website before travelling, as policies can change.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Bringing a rental car without a NOC — You will be turned back without exception. Not having enough cash for exit fees — Some ATMs are available near the border but they can be unreliable. Arriving at peak weekend times — Friday/Saturday morning crossings can have 30–60 minute queues. Go early on weekdays. Assuming a photocopy of your passport will work — It will not. All passengers need their original passport. Dependent visa holders travelling without their sponsor — This is a legal requirement and will result in being denied entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to cross into Musandam from the UAE?
Most nationalities can enter Musandam on a free 14-day tourist visa on arrival at the Tibat border. This includes most Western, South Asian, and Southeast Asian passport holders. UAE residents on visit visas should ensure their visa has 90+ days remaining and check if their nationality is eligible.
How much is the UAE exit fee at the Musandam border?
The UAE exit fee at the Al Darah (Tibat) border is 35 AED per person, payable in cash (AED or OMR). It is collected at the UAE side before you cross into Oman.
Can I take a rental car into Musandam (Oman)?
Yes, but you MUST have a NOC (No Objection Certificate) letter from your car rental company specifically stating the car is permitted to cross into Oman. Without this letter, you will be turned back at the border. Always request this from the rental agency when booking.
What is the best time to cross the Tibat border to avoid queues?
For a Musandam day trip, crossing between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM on weekdays offers the shortest queues. Friday and Saturday mornings can be very busy. The return crossing in the late afternoon (4–6 PM) can also be crowded on weekends.
Can dependent visa holders cross into Musandam?
UAE dependent visa holders MUST be accompanied by their sponsor (the person they are dependent on) when crossing international borders including the UAE-Oman Tibat border.
